"Not A Stick"
by Antoinette Portis

This book captured our imagination. Whether was riding a horse or slaying a dragon - with a "not a stick" the options seemed limitless.

We took turns guessing what the little pig might be imagining with his "not a stick".

After reading this book, we created our own "not a stick" skit. Without speaking we showed off our drama skills.  We had to guess who our classmate was portraying, identify the action and describe the object or thing they were showing us in their skit.

"Different? Same!"

by Heather Tekavec and Pippa Curnick

This book helps us understand the concept of animal characteristics. We learned how groups of animals can sometimes be so different, yet so similar. After listening to how a group of animals were differentwe then had to guess how they were all the same. Each classmate had an opportunity to share their ideas and had to start by saying, "They all have      ". It was fun listening each other's ideas, as well as hearing the author's ideas.

We continued to learn about why animals have certain characteristics, like why they might have stripes, manes or tusks. These interesting facts were found at the back of the book.

We were also challenged to find these characteristics in toy animals.

"The Misadventures of Sweetie Pie"

by Chris Van Allsburg

This book is told through the eyes of a hamster named Sweetie Pie. It helped us understand that sometimes we really have to think about the feelings of our pets and how we treat them. Being a pet owner is a lot of responsibility.
