Looking at DIFFERENT and SAME
We are exploring the concept of DIFFERENT and SAME. We will be exploring this topic in different ways. See how we are currently exploring this topic below.
We are first looking the differences and similarities in animal characteristics. We learned how groups of animals can sometimes be so different and yet so similar. After listening to how a group of animals were different, we then had to guess how they were all the same. Each classmate had an opportunity to share their ideas and had to start by saying, "They all have ". It was fun listening each other's ideas, as well as hearing the author's ideas.
We were also challenged to find these characteristics in toy animals.
We continued to learn about why animals have certain characteristics, like why they might have stripes, manes or tusks. These interesting facts were found at the back of the book.
Forming Sentences Using Rules of English
We are practicing forming sentences using rules of English. We were each given photo cards showing either a person or group of people doing some kind of action. We had to figure out which sentence starter to use to describe our photo - He is . or She is . or They are . Then we identified and stated the action word. Some of us challenged ourselves by identifying the place in the picture.
Examples of Sentences:
She is smelling a flower.
He is swimming in a pool.
They are shopping at the grocery store.
We continued using our drama skills to practice forming sentences. We created skits with either a partner or by ourselves. We had to guess the action and say "He is . or She is . or They are ."

We have also been using 'Story Cubes' to help us practice. First, we roll the dice and must choose an action to show in our skit. The audience must guess which action we chose. We start by saying, "He is . or She is . or They are ."

Positional Words
We have been practicing how to use positional words, such as in, on, under, over, below and above. Learning positional words will help us follow and give directions. We will continue to learn and practice more positional words in a variety of ways.
We played the game "Action Dragon" to create fun and interesting stories. This helped us practice using the positional words in and on.
"The bear sang on the moon." |
We played "Positions Bingo" to learn and practice position concepts and words.
I enjoyed looking at all the ways you are learning new words. Which activity helped you the most with learning new words?
