Group A (Ms. Bain, Ms. Schroeder, Ms. Fitzpatrick)

Numbers, Colours, and 2-D Shapes/3-D Objects

Colours

We have been learning the names for various colours using a variety of materials and through a variety of activities. See how we have been learning!

We played a sorting game using toy fruits. We had to listen very carefully for the two step directions. First, we identified the colour of the fruits. Then, we had to listen for which coloured basket to place them in. For example, we placed red coloured fruits into the the orange basket. We will continue practicing the names of colours in different and exciting ways.

We are continuing to practice the names for various colours in many ways. We sorted different coloured objects into their appropriate spot in the container. We had to listen very carefully for the two step directions. First, we identified the colour of the object. Then, we had to listen for another colour to figure out which spot to place the object in. We took turns giving directions. We start by saying (Name) put pink in green.

Hands-on activities are helping us practice the names for various colours. We took turns giving directions. We gave directions by saying, "(Name) put your orange bead on".

Numbers and Colours

We have been continuing to build on our knowledge of colours and numbers in a variety of ways. As a challenge, we played against each other using ipads and the website Kahoots. We were shown a picture and had to determine the number fruits and/or vegetables in the picture.

We wanted everyone to learn and feel successful, so we used our words to encourage each other to try our best. It was great feeling to get the right answer and we got pretty excited!

2-D Shapes and 3-D Objects

We have been learning the names for various 2-D shapes. First, we identified the shapes and counted the number of sides/points or no points/sides that each 2-D shape had. Then, we used wax sticks to recreate the shapes. We will continue to practice the names of 2-D shapes in different ways. We will also learn the names of different 3-D objects. Stayed tuned for more!

2-D Shapes and Colours

[to be updated, stay tuned!]

We are continuing to build on our knowledge of 2-D shapes and colours. We are were challenged to listen carefully to Ms. Pasion's directions. We had to listen for specific colours and shapes, and determine what parts of our picture we coloured in.
In the image above, students were asked to "colour the circles red".

Exploring HOT and COLD

We are exploring the concepts of hot and cold. We will be exploring this topic in different ways.

Comparing Hot and Cold

We are learning the names for different cloths we might wear when it is cold and hot outside. We first sorted the articles of clothing. Then we identified each article of clothing by saying, "This is a       or These are      ." We also discussed why we might wear some of these articles of clothing, such as mittens to protect our hands from the cold.

We played 'I Spy' using the articles of clothing. We described when we might wear this article of clothing and what part of your body we might wear this on. We started by saying, "I spy something that you wear when it is      outside, and that you wear on your      ".

Examples of Clues:
I spy something that you wear when it is hot outside,
and that you wear on your feet.

I spy something that you wear when it is cold outside,
and that you wear on your head.

We continued to compare hot and cold temperatures. We took turns reading the questions for each activity. We worked with a partner to figure out an answer and then used the red self-checking stick to check our answers.

Reading the Temperature

We are practicing how to read the temperature on the Weather Network. We are looking at Calgary's temperature throughout the week and during the day. We read the temperature by saying...

Throughout the WEEK:
The temperature today is
The temperature yesterday was

Throughout the DAY:
The temperature this morning was
The temperature this afternoon is
The temperature this evening will be

We looked at different thermometers and what we might use them for. Thermometers can be used in many different ways, such as checking our temperature when we are sick or checking the temperature outside.

We applied our skills by reading the temperature on a round thermometer. We tested the temperature of cold and hot water. First, we had to discuss if the temperature would be below or above 0 degrees Celsius by saying, "The temperature will be below 0 degrees Celsius" or  "The temperature will be above 0 degrees Celsius". We then placed our thermometers in the hot and cold water. We read the temperature by saying, "The temperature is           degrees Celsius".

Forming Sentences Using Rules of English

We are practicing forming sentences using rules of the English language. We will be practicing this in many different ways.

Describing - People, Action and Place

We were each given photo cards showing either a person or group of people doing some kind of action. We had to figure out which sentence starter to use to describe our photo by saying, "He is     .  or She is     or They are     ".  Then we identified and stated the action word. Some of us challenged ourselves by identifying the place in the photo.

Examples of Sentences:
She is smelling a flower.
He is swimming in a pool.
They are shopping at the grocery store.

We continued using our drama skills to practice forming sentences. We created skits with either a partner or by ourselves. We had to guess the action and say "He is     . or She is     . or They are     ."

We have also been using 'Story Cubes' to help us practice. First, we roll the dice and must choose an action to show in our skit. The audience must guess which action we chose. We start by saying, "He is     . or She is     . or They are     ."

We have been continuing to practice forming sentences by describing photos. We start by saying, "He is     .  or She is     or They are     ".  We then must identify and state the action word. We are challenged to identify the place in the photos.

Positional Words

We have been practicing how to use positional words, such as in, on, under, over, below and above. Learning positional words will help us follow and give directions. We will continue to learn and practice more positional words in a variety of ways.

We played the game "Action Dragon" to create fun and interesting stories. This helped us practice using the positional words in and on

"The bear sang on the moon."

We played "Positions Bingo" to learn and practice position concepts and words.

Common Phrases and Materials in the Classroom

We continued practicing the names for materials in the classroom and how to politely ask our classmates to borrow one of the items. We played a game we like to call "May I please borrow your...". Below is what we must say to each other.

In order to 'borrow' an item, we must say...

Person 1
"May I please borrow your ______?"
Gesture: smiling and eye contact

Person 2
"Yes you may."
Gesture: smiling and eye contact, and passing the item to the person requesting the item

Person 1
"Thank you."
Gesture: smiling and eye contact

Person 2
"Your welcome."

We have been learning about and practicing how to say common phrases in English. Below are some examples.
