What do Pets need?
We are exploring what pets need to feel happy and safe.
With a partner, we identified what some pets might eat and what homes they might live in. We sorted the images below.

We then explored different items sold at a pet store. We had to determine which items we might or might not find in a pet store. For example, we decided that we would find a purse or fruit at the pet store, instead we would find items like a water dish or pet food.

We listened to the story "The Misadventures of Sweetie Pie" by Chris Van Allsburg. The story is told through the eyes of a hamster named Sweetie Pie. This story helped us understand that sometimes we really have to think about the feelings of our pets and how we treat them. Being a pet owner is a lot of responsibility. We will continue learning about what is means to be a responsible pet owner and what we might need to take care of different pets.
We continued to explore what we might find at the pet store. We played the game 'Go Fish' to help us learn and practice the names of different pets, food, types of homes, and various materials you might find at the pet store. We are each given five cards and start by saying, "(name) do you have a/an ?". If they have the card, they must give it to us. If they do not have the card, they must say, "Go fish!" and we pick up a new card.
Forming Sentences Using Rules of English
We are practicing forming sentences using rules of English. We will be practicing this in many different ways.
Describing People, Actions and Places
We were each given photo cards showing either a person or group of people doing some kind of action. We had to figure out which sentence starter to use to describe our photo by saying, "He is . or She is . or They are ". Then we identified and stated the action word. Some of us challenged ourselves by identifying the place in the picture.
Examples of Sentences:
She is smelling a flower.
She is smelling a flower.
He is swimming in a pool.
They are shopping at the grocery store.
We continued using our drama skills to practice forming sentences. We created skits with either a partner or by ourselves. We had to guess the action and say, "He is . or She is . or They are ."

We have also been using 'Story Cubes' to help us practice. First, we roll the dice and must choose an action to show in our skit. The audience must guess which action we chose. We start by saying, "He is . or She is . or They are ."

Positional Words
We have been practicing how to use positional words, such as in, on, under, over, below and above. Learning positional words will help us follow and give directions. We will continue to learn and practice more positional words in a variety of ways.
We played the game "Action Dragon" to create fun and interesting stories. This helped us practice using the positional words in and on.
"The bear sang on the moon." |
We played "Positions Bingo" to learn and practice position concepts and words.
I enjoyed looking at all the ways you are learning new words. Which activity was your favorite? What activity helped you the most with English?
